英語において、動詞の形を過去形にすることで、過去の時制を表します。
そして、主語の過去の状態や存在を表現するときは、be動詞の過去形を使います。
be動詞の過去形では、am と is は was に変化し、are は were に変わります。
このように、be動詞の過去形には2つの形が存在します。
In English, we express the past tense by changing verbs to their past forms.
We typically use the past tense of the verb 'to be' to express the past state or existence of a subject.
In the past tense of the verb 'to be', 'am' and 'is' change to 'was,' while 'are' becomes 'were,' giving the verb 'to be' two forms.

また、be動詞が過去形になってもbe動詞には変わりないので、主語と補語を「イコール」の関係でつなぐ働きなど、肯定文、否定文、疑問文の作り方は、be動詞の現在形と同じです。
be動詞の現在形を過去形にすれば OK です!
Even in its past tense form, the verb 'to be' retains its role of linking the subject and complement in an 'equal' relationship.
The way to create affirmative, negative, and interrogative sentences remains the same as in
the verb 'to be' in the simple present tense.
We simply switch the forms to the past tense!
